I Want To Write On The End Of The World

This is the 45th entry in my song-inspired series of poems, and I think it’s another fun one this week! That does feel a little strange to say when the poem is about a pretty apocalyptic event and the presumed ending of the world, but nevertheless, I hope you enjoy reading this one!

First Poem In This Series: To Witness, To Behold, inspired by ‘Sowing The Seeds Of Love’ by Tears For Fears

Previous Poem In This Series: Forever New, inspired by ‘Keep Pushin” by REO Speedwagon

I Want To Write On The End Of The World

It will be picture perfect,
the end: a purple sky
studded with shining tears
of some god who forgot
to lean down and nudge
his figurines into place–
and I will be there;
how can I not? It is,
after all, my creation;
my duty is to watch
the Creature, the Thing,
ascend, a Goliath,
from the nervous TV static
and split the heavens
with an Unthinkable figure,
the height an impossibility,
the destruction a car crash
of cosmic scale–
well, a slight exaggeration,
but planetary collapse
would be inevitable–
and yet, if it were left
to me, I would wait
until the world burned,
find the nest–for everything,
even Destroyers, must rest–
and take to its scales
(I assume it will have them)
with marker pen, because
if it is The End, it deserves
to say so–and if I am squashed
for my trouble, then so be it;
but if it sleeps for a little longer,
expect to find a sprawling verse,
and perhaps a hurried doodle,
before:

The End
