I had a lot of fun writing this week’s poem, which is the 41st in this series and was inspired by ‘Worried About Ray’ by The Hoosiers, which I’ve embedded below so you can listen while you read, if you like! I hope you enjoy reading this one.
First Poem In This Series: To Witness, To Behold, inspired by ‘Sowing The Seeds Of Love’ by Tears For Fears
Previous Poem In This Series: Remember To Live, inspired by ‘Long Live The Queen’ by Frank Turner
Enforce Your Ending
It’s… not quite all figured out,
no, but when I tell you not to worry
about deadlines and workloads,
and whether that tree will, one day,
come down in a storm, struck
by lightning or harassed by wind,
and splinter through the living room–
well, forgive the specifics, but
you must trust me, somehow.
I can’t quite explain the details,
but you could say I’ve tied up
a bit of an advantage, in the basement.
Was that too specific?
Perhaps if I speak in hypotheticals…
suppose, in some very poetic way,
there was a designer, of the various
threads of life, the… storylines,
in a sense–not some mythical force,
not a creator of all, but a weaver
of a few. There, imagine this designer–
in an intensely hypothetical sense–
and we will continue.
You’re imagining them? Good, good–
now, if someone were to discover,
perhaps, the pages upon which
his own life was being told–
well, not all of it,
but a significant sliver–
then that person would surely,
you must agree, be justified
in following the crumpled breadcrumbs
to their ending, and, perhaps,
seizing the opportunity
to take fate into their own hands.
Nothing in life can be certain,
naturally, but possessing such an…
advantage, let’s say, would certainly
be something. To see the words,
shakily written, securing
a future painted in a shade of gold,
rather than that terrible, uncertain grey.
What? Yes, yes, of course
this is just a hypothetical–
listen to yourself; how ridiculous
would it be to have the writer
of your own life under your thumb?
But still… trust me when I say
that I have things figured out,
in a sense; I will ensure that
we have our fairy tale ending;
in a manner of speaking, anyway.
