Waking Dreams

After a little bit of a hiatus going into the new year, I’m back with more song-inspired poems! This is the thirty-fourth entry in this series, and it was inspired by ‘Made of Stone’ by The Stone Roses, which, as ever, I’ve embedded into the post below, so feel free to give it a listen while you’re reading – and I hope you enjoy this poem!

First Poem In This Series: To Witness, To Behold, inspired by ‘Sowing The Seeds Of Love’ by Tears For Fears

Previous Poem In This Series: Sit Beside Me, inspired by ‘The World Is Ugly’ by My Chemical Romance

Waking Dreams

Constant as my heartbeat,
my brain creates when life
is muted; long nights stretch
outside bus windows, big
and empty and rain-flecked;
I see only what warring shadows
and streetlights allow–
so, I indulge my imagination.
Storylines creep down
a can-scattered aisle,
unburdened by ‘real’ or ‘unreal’,
‘truth’ or ‘untruth’, ‘yes’
or ‘no’. For forty minutes–
doubled, eighty–I am beyond.
Something other overlays
seat graffiti, scarred plastic,
until–because, as all stories must,
it does end–the last stop:
the air is cold, with a bite,
as if it knows it heralds
a return from fantasy.
